Regional and local rail passenger transport services market segments

In regional and local rail passenger transport services, the train path charges are calculated for two market segments per federal state.

Regional and local rail passenger transport services (SPNV)

Regional and local rail passenger transport services are primarily used for the carriage of passengers in urban, suburban or regional transport. Traffic that connects metropolitan train stations at an average travel speed of at least 130 kph is not used for urban, suburban or regional transport. In cases of doubt, traffic in all other stopping sections is used for urban, suburban or regional transport if a train primarily carries travellers whose final destination does not exceed 50 kilometres or a travel time of one hour.

Segmentation

Segmentation for regional and local rail passenger transport services is carried out as per Section 37 of the German Railway Regulation Act and the resolution of the German Federal Network Agency according to federal states. Each federal state has its own laden journey and light running segment.

Detailed information on the market segments in regional and local rail passenger transport services can be found in Chapter 6 of the Network Statement 2018.
